Where was I at 11:00 AM this morning? I’ll give you one guess. June 15th is quickly approaching and we’ve got a deadline at work. I’m still officially the new guy at work. When I just started I was told that it would take me about 6 months before I could become relatively proficient at what I do. I’m right about 4.5 month mark right now, so I still got a ways to go.
Usually, I can get through one or, on a great day, two tasks everyday. Last week I was told that I would need to up this to an average of three (3) a day. Wow. What has changed from then up till now? Not much. There’s been one day where I cleared three (3) items and even one where I did none. It’s not that I’m lazy or that I’m stupid (at least I don’t think so :)). The problem is that with every new task comes a new aspect of the software that I need to first research, then grasp, and then apply and finally begin to diagnose the problem. Sometimes all of this is not possible if certain people who have detailed knowledge of things aren’t available for me to pick their brain.
So this was my plan: The past week was meant to be a week of research. I would first examine a task, perform the research, find who I needed to bug, bug them till I had 70% of what I needed , then I would take notes, leave that task and move on to the next. Rinse and repeat this a few times and we end up at work on Saturday morning attempting to fix things after gathering information.
Such is the nature of the business sometimes. What’s the good news? Over time is always good news. Off to bed I go. Sunday is going to be a long day of cleaning and laundry.
