Day In The Life of Baz

Now I know you’ve heard it before, but the cliche is true: “I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico“. I’ve just gotten full custody of the Lancer. Yep, Lava let go of it and gave it to me so that I can go to work. Previously, the car insurance was in her name and she was signed up with AllState. The cost was somewhere around $85.00 for her only. We’ve been dragging out feet on adding me to the insurance for a while since it would make the cost sky rocket because I was under 25.

Since I would have the car full time from now on, we decided to bite the bullet and add me to the insurance. It was supposed to go into effect in February. The price was somewhere around $150.00., which was expected since I’m under 25. Just for kicks we decided to go online and check out what Geico had to offer. After the huge list of questions we got a quote for $82.85. So you’re thinking what’s the big deal a couple bucks cheaper right? But that cost includes me. Also, the coverage was slightly better. So to recap: We added me to the insurance and got better coverage yet the cost was cheaper at Geico than it was with only Lava at AllState.

Job Update - Part 1

Introduction

OK, now I did promise you some information about my new job, so here goes. First off we need a little background information.

How It All Started

Sometime back in October of 2006, during my last semester of school, a Software company came to my school to recruit programmers. They are situated in Texas and they provide a Software Package for companies in Texas. They have about 85% of the market cornered, so business is really good. Business is so good that they got a new client in the state of Washington. For this client, however, they were doing a complete rewrite of their software from Visual C++ 6.0 (with all that MFC stuff) to a .NET product written in C#. So they were looking for programmers to work on the new stuff. So they were going from university to university looking for some programmers to handle the new contract.

I was supposed to be one of these programmers, but things didn’t really work out that way. I went to the interview at my school, took a test, got another interview for a week later, and went to that interview. I thought everything was all falling into place, except I didn’t hear from them every again. About a month and a half later I decided to call to see what’s up. I was informed that all the positions were filled. Needless to say I was disappointed. About two days after that I got a phone call asking me whether I would be interested in a Visual C++ position. I said “sure, why not”. I did a telephone interview and got the job.

I’ve read this article some time ago. When I first saw it I wanted to scream. At the time I was a college student with over $26,000 in debt, working 20 hours a week for $5.15/hr. This is the first thing that caught my eye.

They’ve even considered giving up their unlisted phone number. At a cost of $3 a month, this move wouldn’t save much — even over, say, 150 years

Are you seriously telling me that things are that bad that this is what it’s come to? It’s a double income family and they claim to be struggling from week to week. One of the only explainations I’ve seen for their, um, situation is that the dude went and bought himself not one, but two rental properties. At the writing of this article he hasn’t found any tenants? Now how many months of paying for these properties with NO revenue coming in from them does it take to figure you need to cut your losses?

Merry Xmas To All

Just wanted to take some time off and wish everyone a very Merry Xmas. I hope everything goes well for you guys and I hope everyone has a lot of fun.

Just an FYI, since I’m done with school now and I’m taking a long break, to enterain myself I’ve started back on my Anime train again. Yes, that’s right, I’m back to downloading Naruto and Bleach every week. Since I haven’t looked at them for a while, I’ve got a lot to catch up on.
