Day In The Life of Baz

Where was I at 11:00 AM this morning? I’ll give you one guess. June 15th is quickly approaching and we’ve got a deadline at work. I’m still officially the new guy at work. When I just started I was told that it would take me about 6 months before I could become relatively proficient at what I do. I’m right about 4.5 month mark right now, so I still got a ways to go.

Usually, I can get through one or, on a great day, two tasks everyday. Last week I was told that I would need to up this to an average of three (3) a day. Wow. What has changed from then up till now? Not much. There’s been one day where I cleared three (3) items and even one where I did none. It’s not that I’m lazy or that I’m stupid (at least I don’t think so :)). The problem is that with every new task comes a new aspect of the software that I need to first research, then grasp, and then apply and finally begin to diagnose the problem. Sometimes all of this is not possible if certain people who have detailed knowledge of things aren’t available for me to pick their brain.

Found The Problem, I Think

As you know, I’ve got rats. When I got home yesterday I noticed that Pest Control had been in the apartment. I went down to the office to get a quick update of situation. The guy found two (2) holes from which the vermin was gaining entry into my apartment. There was one by the door and one in the dishwasher. They also told me that maintenance had patched those two places. Now, the dishwasher I don’t understand. From the patchwork I saw, they patched a small one where there pipe from under the sink goes to the dishwasher and they sealed up the space between the dishwasher and the counter. I understand that maybe the lil’ bastard was getting around through these holes, but outside? Also, I have seen neither a hole or patches near my front door. I guess I’ll have to take their word for it. So since the entry points have been sealed, I can deduce that they’ve either sealed the bugger in or out. I hope it’s out.

Rats! I Got…Well…Rats

Well I do. I keep saying rats, but I hope it’s just one. The tail (no pun indented, I just can’t spell) begins about two weeks ago. But before that I need to give a lil’ bit of history. I’ve been living in TX for almost four (4) years and I’ve never seen a rat, until a few days ago. But, back to the beginning. A few weeks ago a noticed a little black clump on my carpet. Upon close inspection (*sigh*…yes with my hands) I concluded that it must be dirt that I tracked into the apartment with my shoes. I whipped out some paper towels, picked it up and dumped it in the trash. I thought nothing of it.

Over the next few days I saw the occasional lil’ clump and just continued picking it up. I made mental notes to wipe my feet more when I get into the house. A few days later, I was sleeping and heard noises in the kitchen. Now, after you get out of the bedroom, the apartment is more or less wide open. The walls don’t hide much. So to find an intruder all I would need to do is glance into the living room and then head to the kitchen. So I got up, grabbed something to defend myself with, and cautiously made my way to the kitchen. I paused right next to the wall, flipped on the switch and jumped into the kitchen. Nothing. Hmph, must have been my imagination/wind/ghosts, something. I went back to bed and forgot all about it.

I Got Widgets

So you’re thinking what’s new right? Wordpress widgets have been out for a while now. I just recently decdided to give them a go and see what’s what. I was very content is firing up FileZilla and editing sidebar.php. It took a little bit of work to get them up and running how I wanted, but after that everything seemed great.

You simple drag and drop stuff you want for your sidebar where you want it. So, if you see stuff floating around every now and then, don’t get alarmed. It’s just me, playing with the widgets. :)

Car insurance is a pain. Why do we really need car insurance anyway? I mean, I’ve been driving around for years and have never had a single problem. Well, I have bumped a few bumpers here and there, but that’s what they’re for right? I mean, they call them bumpers.

On a more serious note: Texas law states that insurance is a must. The only optional portion is comprehensive insurance. This basically means that if you get into an accident that is your fault, then the insurance company will pay for damages to your car. In Texas this is a necessity if you have a lien against your car: if you’re financing through a dealership or bank.

I’ve always been against insurance in general. I feel that insurance should be “in case stuff happens”. So if stuff doesn’t happen, I’m of the opinion that you should get your money back. So along those lines you’d be better off putting your money into a high yield savings account. But since everyone isn’t so disciplined, we need insurance companies to guide the masses. Especially since I recently got a new car, I would just die if something happened to it and I couldn’t get it repaired.
