water_drop.jpgAs usual, LifeHacker has opened my eyes. I stumbled up the following at LifeHacker. so it got me thinking of what I do.

Introduction

First off I must admit something. I’m from the Commonwealth of Dominica. It’s a beautiful island in the Caribbean and we have a river for everyday of the week. No, seriously, there are 365 rivers. Water isn’t usually a problem for most. Apart from a few months when it’s hot and some new, rapidly developing residential areas (where the irrigation system hasn’t grown with the population) water isn’t a problem back home. At our house, water isn’t regulated. You pay a flat monthly fee and that’s it. Some years ago, they started putting meters on newer houses so that they are charged per usage. Also, when I came up here, the apartment complex that I lived in for almost four (4) years had water included in the rent and that was a fixed price. So I’ve never really gotten used to the whole saving water thing.

Now I have another confession. It’s not my first point of duty to try to save the world. Yes, I’m sorry, I know it sounds bad, but that is not my primary focus. It’s money motivated, that’s it, I’m sorry. All this saving electricity, saving gas, saving water, etc. However, I take comfort in the fact that my frugality does benefit the world.

Navy Shower

With that being said, I have been using the Navy Shower method for a while. My primary purpose was that running the hot water meant and increase in the electricity bill. At my current apartment, I have an even more direct reason to do so: I pay for water, and I pay a lot. The Navy Shower, if executed properly, saves a ton of water and therefore a ton of money. The only problem is that I can’t very well use it in the winter. Since I don’t usually run the heater in my apartment, unless it’s freezing. I always clothes on. But when you get naked and add that element of water to your body, things can get real cold real fast. So in the winter, I’m forced to run the hot water for longer than I would like, just so that I don’t freeze. But in the summer, it’s Navy all the way.

Incredible Head

One thing I don’t like about my current shower facility is that you can’t lower the water pressure. There’s only the concept of on and off; no middle guy. Turning the knob takes you from cold to hot, that’s it. So, this makes my using the Navy Shower idea a lil’ bit more difficult. The water needs to be fully off. I need a little trickle for soaping, etc. So, what is the solution? The Incredible Head Power Shower Showerhead. Yes, I know, it sounded weird to me too. What it is, is a low flow shower head that has a nice little convenient button that slows the water down to that beautiful trickle that we all love. It’s at shower level, so you don’t need to bend down. Since you don’t mess with the actual faucet, you don’t lose that perfect temperature setting that it always takes ages to find.

Haven’t bought one yet, but I’m on my way to.
