Air Conditioning At 69 Degrees - Way To Save!
Jun 5th, 2007 by Baz L
A few days ago I was driving down to go to the store. It was early afternoon. Since summer is fast approaching, it has been hot down here for some time now, but that day it was a beautiful 69 degrees outside. I got in the car, rolled down the windows and enjoyed the window blow in my hair face. It was a great day.
I was sitting at a red light in a little bit of traffic and I noticed something that shocked me a little bit. I could see condensation dropping from the car to the left of me. Yep, all the windows were rolled up and, no doubt, the A/C was on. Now, to recap, we’re not on the highway doing 60 mph so we don’t need the windows up to reduce drag. We’re on a suburban street with a speed limit of 40 mph and we’re sitting at a light. And it’s bloody 69 degrees out. I peered into the window and noticed that an elderly woman was driving, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt: maybe she has some sort of problem, maybe she can’t stand the sun.
I started to relax, but then I turned to my right. You guessed it, all the windows were rolled up. So I started looking around; there were eight other vehicles are the light: cars, SUVs, trucks, etc. Only one other car had the windows down. So I was wondering, am I the only one who has made the link between air conditioning and poor gas mileage? Sure, when summer really hits and TX starts to fry like an egg on a skillet and we’re talking about triple digits, I’m all for the A/C, but at 69 degrees? Are these people serious?
I also experience something similar at my apartment. I live upstairs and my bedroom window is strategically positioned above the A/C unit’s fan. On nice cool days, such as today, I like to open my windows and let the fresh air in. But one of my neighbor, apparently, can’t stand the sweltering 70 degree weather, so they are constantly running the A/C and that causes hot air to blow up to my window.
Maybe it’s just me, but where I come from, only rich folks have A/C in the house. If you wanted A/C you go to the bank to cash a check. Also, my mom’s car didn’t have any A/C so you learned strategies such as parking in the shade, putting up those windshield thingies, and leaving the windows cracked when you park. But back in Dominica, we have a different type of heat. It’s bloody hot, however we don’t have the kind of humidity that we get here in TX. When you stand in the shade, it’s cool.
But still, A/C at 69 degrees, what has the world come to? And we honestly express gas prices to drop when we do ridiculous things like this. Gas prices are finicky and they don’t always follow basic economics, but the premise of supply and demand will always apply. Oh well, I guess me and the Prius owners will have to reduce gas prices and save the world on our own.

Please understand, I’m not saying that I’m going to have my windows down when it hits 99 degrees, but when I can, I try to take in the cool fresh air where I can get it.
