You are soooooo brave! The last time I saw a mouse in one of my apts, I packed up and stayed with my cousin for a few days.

When I came home, I had her cat with me!

Never saw a mouse again after that.

I can not imagine what I would do if there was a RAT in my apt. and I'm from New York!!! I have NEVER seen a rat in an apt...in a subway station but never in an apt.

I would have died...literally!

Wow that is absolutely terrible! Sure beats my 'mouse' story, but here goes...

I just moved out of my apartment on campus. This place was terrible... built in the 1950s, it was infested with huge spiders, bugs and really random things (found a giant slug once, a lizard one evening - and the absolute worst, a small snake just outside my front door - I am deathly scared of those!!).

Anyway, I was in the computer room one day last year and heard something in the kitchen... I go investigate, nothing... hear it again... nothing. One more time and I see the mouse! It was small, but still that didn't help matters.

I got a mouse trap the next day and strategically placed it by the sink. I just happened to be doing some work at the kitchen table and see the mouse come out of hiding, walk right up to the trap, sniff, then casually walk around it and right past my feet! This guy was brave! Grrr!

Luckily, he never came around after that. Perhaps he went to bother the neighbors :)

Anyway, get some traps or poison and take care of that sucker ASAP!

Yeah, I had a run in with a rat last fall. Our garbage can lids have two large holes in them (not sure what the last owner did to them). I grabbed the can to take it to the curb and thought I saw something move inside. I thought it might be a squirrel, but then it started scampering around like crazy. I dropped the can when I thought it might jump out of the hole and run up my arm.

When I dropped the can the lid popped off, and then I saw the big rat run down towards our front door and disappear. I searched for it, but couldn't figure out where it went.

A week later, when I opened the mudroom door (where we keep our cans outside), I smelled something funny. I thought I recognized the smell, but I figured it was just the garbage. The next day, I smelled it again and remembered the smell. It was the smell of decomposing flesh. I opened the lid and saw the dead rat inside. Well, at least that problem took care of itself.

By the way, I know the smell because last year, I also found a dead possum rotting behind our shed. I tossed it over the fence for the neighbor to take care of. His dog is constantly barking, so I figured I'd give it a present :) (naughty naughty)

Here's the redneck cure for rats:
Get a bag of quick drying cement and mix a scoop of it with equal parts sugar. Leave it out. The rats eat it. They get thirsty. They go somewhere to find some water, and then they die when the cement hardens.
No more rats.
