I Got Widgets
May 30th, 2007 by Baz L
So you’re thinking what’s new right? Wordpress widgets have been out for a while now. I just recently decdided to give them a go and see what’s what. I was very content is firing up FileZilla and editing sidebar.php. It took a little bit of work to get them up and running how I wanted, but after that everything seemed great.
You simple drag and drop stuff you want for your sidebar where you want it. So, if you see stuff floating around every now and then, don’t get alarmed. It’s just me, playing with the widgets. ![]()

I suppose I should check them out, but I never really found a need.
Usually I just pull up file-zilla and move stuff around, then go into the CSS and cut&past php’s around. It always just seemed easier to do it that way. I dunno.
I also like to put RSS feeds into my sidebars when I want to be able to put things that want to be kept current.
I only now started playing around with embedding videos into the sidebars. That’s a lot of fun so far.
Next thing I want to figure out is how to put a sig line so that it appears on the end of all my posts.
But I’ll get to that when I have more time.
Especially for people who are often undecided about where you want things or if you even want certain things there.
A lot of plugins right now come with Widgets already, so you don’t even have to bother with the theme when you add a new plugin.
The only problem I’ve found is for plugins that don’t have built in Widgets. I think that the Widgets should have an option to embed PHP. But for this you have to add another plugin.
I use widgets in firefox already, and I like them.
When you use them in wordpress, where do you go to drag and drop?
Is there a new tab?
The default plugin gives you the ability to add up to 9 text Widgets. Where they got the number from, who knows. And these only allow HTML and Text. Great for Ads though, that don’t have any PHP.
But for inserting PHP (most plugins) the King’s Text Widget plugin allows you to paste PHP code. It’s great. And you can add up to 20 of them. Again, where they got that limit, I don’t know, but that should be more than enough I guess.
