By now we’ve all heard about the racist comments that Dog The Bounty Hunter spouted out while on the phone with his son. Yesterday I heard about his apology on the radio. It was rather hilarious actually. He said stuff like he feels connected to the Black community and as such thought he was allowed to use that word; he uses it all the time among his black friends; and (this one is the kicker) he now knows that “he’s not black” and he can’t use the word. I’m serious, that’s what the guy said.
Context Of Language
First off, as a black man, you know what side of the fence I’m sitting on with this. With that said. The N word is a bad word. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. However, there is something to be said for context.
I’m not sure where it originated from. It could be a Culture thing, a Black thing, a Hood thing, or a Hip Hop thing, who knows (let’s just call it Hip Hop to be neutral). But the Hip Hop community has a way of taking negative words and flipping them to mean something totally different. Case in point, words like bad, mad, sick, wicked, ill, etc. Flip open Websters and you’ll know that none of these is a good thing. But take a walk down to the hood and you’ll hear them being used to mean something totally different.
I believe that the N word fits into that category. A lot of people don’t agree. They say that not even Blacks should be allowed to use that word because we are executing some self-mental-reverse racists thing, I don’t know. My point is, words have context.
Take this one sentence:
That guy is ill!
The context of this statement determines whether we call a Record Label or an Ambulance.
When Is The N Word OK?
Some say that it’s never OK, and that’s their opinion. Some say that Whites should not be able to use that word because they don’t understand the struggle that Black people have gone through.
I think all of that is just crap, honestly. Where I’m from, that word is used to refer to Blacks, Whites, Mexicans and anyone who’s standing right there at the time. It simply means “That guy standing right there” or “My boy/brother/partner/homey”.
It’s not so much who’s allowed to use it, but the context in which they do and there background.
Dog’s Context
With that said, Dog used this while on the phone talking to his white song. There was no Hood/Hip Hop context in what he said. Therefore, Dog the Bounty Hunter is a racist bastard. It’s that simple. There are a lot of racist bastards out there.
I say who cares? He’s still going to have more money that a lot of the folks all up in arms. Should one or two rich white men pay for all the racist bastards around? I don’t think so?
I have more to worry about from Bill Bob and his shotgun than from some dude on TV.
