poker

Well someone told me some time ago that I should be more sociable and try to make more friends. So when some of my coworkers offered to have me over for poker night, I figured why not?

So this is how night one goes. There’s a $20.00 buy in . That’s what everyone pays to have a stack of chips in front of them for the night. Now, from here it varies depending on how many players there are, but usually the 1st place winner gets most of the money and the 2nd place gets $30.00 back .

Now, night one was the 1st time I’ve played this game. I even brought along, what I now call, my lucky cheat sheet. It’s just a list of hands and stuff, nothing useful. I actually managed to stay in until 2nd place and got back $30 bucks. So I’m $10 up and loving it.

Night two, didn’t go as good. I can’t remember when I got knocked out, but it was way before 2nd place so I was out $20.00, for a net effect of $10 under.

There is a process that we run on a particular client (our largest) every week. It runs at 7:00 PM on Sunday evening and another process is supposed to pick up and complete on Monday at 1:00 AM.

We recently made some changes to the process and we are using this week as a sort of test run. So I just decided to pop in a have a look see to make sure that everything was running smoothly. Well, it wasn’t.

Phew! It’s a good thing I decided to pop in and look it over. I knew what was wrong and could fix it. Still trying to figure out why, but that could wait till tomorrow. But then something strange happened. Now keep in mind this was at 10:35 PM on Sunday night. While I was Remote Desktoped into my computer at work, I noticed an email pop up. I thought it might have been some residual message that didn’t pop up in Outlook for whatever reason. But no, it was a current email sent out seconds ago.

Longest Day Of The Year

Today at about 1:16 PM, don’t ask me where they got the time from, but today was officially the first day of summer. What’s special about today? It’s the longest day of the year. I was sitting in the break room at work, when one of our employees came out with some ice cream cones, syrup, whipped cream, and of course ice cream.

This was our “First Day of Summer” celebration. One good thing about the longest day of the year is that it’s all down hill from here. I can’t wait till the nice short days of fall come around. I hope they bring some cool weather with them. One good thing about today is that it was very cloudy out today and I think a lil’ bit rainy too, so it wasn’t hot. Right now, I’m not a big summer fan. Since I’ve graduated and work full time, I get ten (10) vacation days a year; that’s it. So no more summers off. All that happens during summer is that I see all the other happy folks that don’t have anything to do while I’m on my way home from work. And of course there’s the heat.

Where was I at 11:00 AM this morning? I’ll give you one guess. June 15th is quickly approaching and we’ve got a deadline at work. I’m still officially the new guy at work. When I just started I was told that it would take me about 6 months before I could become relatively proficient at what I do. I’m right about 4.5 month mark right now, so I still got a ways to go.

Usually, I can get through one or, on a great day, two tasks everyday. Last week I was told that I would need to up this to an average of three (3) a day. Wow. What has changed from then up till now? Not much. There’s been one day where I cleared three (3) items and even one where I did none. It’s not that I’m lazy or that I’m stupid (at least I don’t think so :)). The problem is that with every new task comes a new aspect of the software that I need to first research, then grasp, and then apply and finally begin to diagnose the problem. Sometimes all of this is not possible if certain people who have detailed knowledge of things aren’t available for me to pick their brain.

Weekend Warrior

Today was an interesting day. It started out as the regular Sunday morning: I woke up, got some breakfast, lazed around the house for a bit, then I flipped on the television and started browsing channels. When I realized there was nothing good on, I decided to watch a movie. So, I popped in a DVD and laid back and I was just relaxing. Then all of a sudden, something hit me. “Don’t I have to be somewhere? No….it’s Sunday, no one has to be anywhere on a Sunday”. Then it started rushing back to me.

Last Sunday was the day of the Car Show and Concert that I went to. I woke up from that with a stuffy nose. Apparently I had (still have) some allergy problems. As soon as I got out of bed and got dressed for the Car Show I started feeling better. I got there and had a blast for the entire day. When I got back in, however, the symptoms returned as soon as I got to bed. Monday morning was much of the say, with the exception that when I got to work I started feeling worse. I only clocked three (3) hours of work that day. I really couldn’t concentrate on anything. I got home at about 11:00 AM, went to bed and was out until 11:44 PM. Yep, that’s right.
