Water Frugality - The Navy Shower and The Incredible Head

water_drop.jpgAs usual, LifeHacker has opened my eyes. I stumbled up the following at LifeHacker. so it got me thinking of what I do.

Introduction

First off I must admit something. I’m from the Commonwealth of Dominica. It’s a beautiful island in the Caribbean and we have a river for everyday of the week. No, seriously, there are 365 rivers. Water isn’t usually a problem for most. Apart from a few months when it’s hot and some new, rapidly developing residential areas (where the irrigation system hasn’t grown with the population) water isn’t a problem back home. At our house, water isn’t regulated. You pay a flat monthly fee and that’s it. Some years ago, they started putting meters on newer houses so that they are charged per usage. Also, when I came up here, the apartment complex that I lived in for almost four (4) years had water included in the rent and that was a fixed price. So I’ve never really gotten used to the whole saving water thing.

Need To Have A Long Talk With The Weatherman

As I always do in the morning, I looked at the weather report. The weatherman said that there’s only going to be some slight scattered showers, maybe. It was supposed to be 95 degrees, feeling like 105. So I got ready for an extremely hot day.

Fast forward to 5:00PM. I step out of the office into a dark, gloomy afternoon. The sky was dark and there was lighting all over the place. So I figured it’s not that bad, at least it’s not hot. After about 5 minutes it could hardly see where I was going. The rain was falling sidewards, it was ridiculous. After a short while, I was reduced to doing 20 MPH in a 40. You just couldn’t go any faster because the roads were flowing with water. Some lanes were reduced to “Trucks and SUVs only”, not officially but because the laws of physics dictated.

I think the weatherman owes me a written apology.

Insomnia With A Very Good Reason

It’s 1:37AM. Why can’t I sleep?

  • Am I stressed from work?
No. Work is done till Thursday, couldn’t care less.
  • Am I so excited about my plans for the 4th of July?
Nope. Sorry, I just plan on staying home to sleep?
  • Am I just not tired because I slept too much the night before?
Actually, I went to bed about 2:30AM yesterday and I was looking forward to an early retiring tonight (last night, whatever)

You give up?

My bed popped. As you know, I have very little furniture in my apartment. Ok, none. And I was relying on an air bed. The thing worked fine for many months. I had no reason to get a real bed, until now. I got off to put a book away, put a knee on to climb back on and heard a quiet poooooffff and felt the rushing air. My knee practically went through the thing. There’s a huge gaping hole through the blasted thing. I’m pissed. Can’t even return it to the store.

Oh well. And this couldn’t have come during a worst month. I guess that’s what emergency savings are for huh?

Eight (8) Random Things About Me

Today I got tagged by Lava for 8 random things about me. Here’s how it goes: You spit eight (8) personal facts about yourself and you tag eight (8) other bloggers with it. Here we go:

  1. Like Lava, I like dolphins too, but on a plate next to some rice and potatoes. Yumm
  2. I thought I would like a job doing something I like, but I realized that I just don’t like work period.
  3. I have absolutely no furniture in my apartment. I really don’t see the need right now.
  4. I’m in love with the color blue. Almost any shade and I’m there, but if I had to pick, it would be navy.
  5. I just fell in love with AutoHotKey. Excellent tool. I guess I love it because I’m lazy.
  6. I’m lazy. Yes, I really am. Actually, I just like the quick, short, efficeint way around things. I’ve never been one to reinvent the wheel.
