It’s Tornado Weather Again

Some people like this time of year. Spring time; we say goodbye to Winter for another few months (we hope) and we welcome the warmth, the sunshine, the birds and all that good stuff. However, in Texas, it’s always a little bit more complicated than that. We’ve had nothing but sudden scattered showers for the past three (3) weeks. For the past two (2) nights in a row, we’ve been having nothing but freak thunderstorms: lightning, thunder, and of course it wouldn’t be Texas if we didn’t have any hail.

Just wanted to share with you guys, that this weather sucks. It sucks a lot. Now added to these conditions outside, we have the temperature problem inside: There’s a constant battle among the thermostats from various departments. Some departments are too warm, some and just right like Goldie Lox and of course mine has to be freezing. Therefore, it appears that I need to wear a jacket year round. Yay Texas.

Merry Christmas To All

Christmas is a great time of year for most. I’m not usually a Christmas person. Just because people seem to put a lot of emphasis on the wrong things. It seems to be highly commercialized and about material things, but to each his own.

When I was in college, Christmas usually only meant two weeks off of school to sit and chill. It was usually a boring time for me, because 90% of the college body would go visit family and friends. So no one was around to do anything with.

Working would have made this Christmas even less of a celebration, since we would only get the 24th and 25th off from work. But it just so happens that my Mom decided to make the long trip up from Dominica to spend some time and Lava got some time off from school (lucky bastard), so we’re doing the family thing.

Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Wait, What Do I Want?

One problem that I’ve always had, is that I’m a very practical person. My significant other has asked me countless times, “What do you want for Christmas?”. Although there is quite a large laundry list of things that I want. The problem is, I can’t pick one thing that I can justify getting, since the pit of money that we’re both rolling in has a very distinct and visible bottom.

For a long time, what I’ve always wanted was a wide screen LCD monitor. Earlier this year I made myself happy with the purchase of my new computer. Since then, what I’ve wanted was another wide screen LCD monitor. Who ever invented the dual monitor set up is a genius! This Christmas, I’ve already budgeted money for that gift to myself. But the question remains, what would I like someone to get me?

Redefining The Word Want

A long time ago I seem to have confused the word want with thing like beneficial, need, etc. Although the second monitor was usually a bit more pricey than I would go, I’ve already justified the purchase.

By now we’ve all heard about the racist comments that Dog The Bounty Hunter spouted out while on the phone with his son. Yesterday I heard about his apology on the radio. It was rather hilarious actually. He said stuff like he feels connected to the Black community and as such thought he was allowed to use that word; he uses it all the time among his black friends; and (this one is the kicker) he now knows that “he’s not black” and he can’t use the word. I’m serious, that’s what the guy said.

Context Of Language

First off, as a black man, you know what side of the fence I’m sitting on with this. With that said. The N word is a bad word. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. However, there is something to be said for context.

I’m not sure where it originated from. It could be a Culture thing, a Black thing, a Hood thing, or a Hip Hop thing, who knows (let’s just call it Hip Hop to be neutral). But the Hip Hop community has a way of taking negative words and flipping them to mean something totally different. Case in point, words like bad, mad, sick, wicked, ill, etc. Flip open Websters and you’ll know that none of these is a good thing. But take a walk down to the hood and you’ll hear them being used to mean something totally different.
